Benchmarking is critical to:
Discovering opportunities to lower energy and water consumption
Tracking the progress properties have made
Comparing buildings’ energy and water consumption to similar buildings.
Energy and Water Reporting and Benchmarking (EWRB) has been a mandated regulation in Ontario since 2018 (O. Reg.506/18).
Due to the impact of COVID-19, the government has extended the EWRB reporting deadline to October 15th, 2021.
Energy@Work is here to help!
ENERGY STAR Certification is a prestigious program that recognizes building performance that is 75% or more energy efficient than similar buildings.
NEW: Effective August 30th, 2021, NRCan has added Multi-family Housing to the list of eligible property types that can receive ENERGY STAR Building Certification.
Energy@Work is proud to have assisted 16 commercial offices obtain 2020 ENERGY STAR Building Certification last year, and there is still time to obtain 2021 ENERGY STAR Building Certification ahead of the approaching December 10th deadline.
Contact Us for more details on how your commercial office or multi-family building can join NRCan's registry of Canada's ENERGY STAR Certified Buildings.

Energy@Work’s relationship with Bala began when he led the BOMA Toronto Conservation and Demand Management program for Ontario. The program won the AEE Award because it was practical, customer centric, and achieved results.
Our collaboration continued on many fronts, including:
Earth Hour Challenge: expanded to the annual ‘Beyond Earth Hour Challenge’, now is approaching its 11th anniversary
Global Adjustment Mechanism (GAM) Workshops: held mid-May to help customers prepare for their GAM June 15th decision.
Workshop: Education series as well as a 3-part workshop on HVAC Pandemic Response.
Advocacy:
Bala's contributions to the CRE sector have been invaluable, including:
OEB Smart Grid Working Group
Energy and Water Reporting and Benchmarking (EWRB), O.Reg. 506/18
Green Energy Act
Ontario’s Long Term Energy Plan
CDM and DSM investments, and more!
Energy Committee: Focused on energy-related matters and looks for practical solutions.
These are a small sample of Bala’s activities. Bala’s sustainability footprint is much greater, and he is going to be missed. Each of his contributions had a central focus to make Ontario ‘Strong and Proud’.
The good news is what we can expect to see from Bala in his new role as Vice President, Sustainability, Advocacy and Stakeholder Relations at BOMA Canada. Holistic solutions in response to climate change are needed today and champions such as Bala are necessary for positive change.
We wish Bala the best of luck in his new role to help BOMA Canada thrive and sustain impactful solutions in the years to come!
The team at 25 York St were committed to fulfilling all aspects of the evaluation criteria for this award, including:
measures resulting in energy and GHG reduction
occupant health and safety
water conservation
commitment to continued sustainability
Staff awareness
Without staff awareness we believe that their achievements would not have been possible. It’s the reason we focus so much attention of the “People” component on the 3P’s: People, Process and Products. It’s the people that get ideas off the ground which generate and sustain positive change through continual maintenance and innovative solutions.
“The Existing Building Award is presented to the team responsible for a commercial or institutional (hospital, government building or academic institution) project which demonstrates continuous improvement in building operation, performance, and occupant satisfaction”
Our Energy Management Action Plan (E-MAP) can be considered an “offense” approach- identifying opportunities and tackling them to maximize savings opportunities. What can be overlooked, and is possible through continual monitoring, is the potential for “defensive” savings by discovering and correcting errors.
For example, during an E-MAP meeting, Energy@Work’s Energy Manager, Lucas Oliveira, picked up on a billing error in a large commercial building.
“We noticed that the Gas bill was higher than the previous year. When comparing with 2019, it was a 134% (31,000 m3) increase.
By looking at the bills, I noticed that [the building] always had an "actual" bill. However, for March and April 2020, the consumption was "estimated." By looking at the Carma data, it was also possible to see the difference. Carma was reading 19,700 m3, and the bill was 54,000 m3.
Usually, an issue like this would correct itself in the following "actual" bill. However, this was not the case.
When I called Enbridge and explained the situation, noting the pulse factor, they realized the billing error. Now, they are correcting the mistake”
Monthly monitoring provided the insight necessary to catch and correct an error that might have otherwise slipped through the cracks.
Energy@Work’s E-MAP has successfully achieved over $3.2 million in savings with an investment of $500,000.
The August GAM cost is $0.54 billion.
Energy@Work wants to see a greater focus on GAM cost reduction and who to speak with to ask “why?”.
GAM costs are largely Nuclear (OPG and non-OPG). However, conservation continues to be reported as the reason for GAM. Another ‘why?’ question that remains unanswered.
Energy@Work’s services includes a “GAM coach”. We maintain the importance of a GAM Strategy for either Class A or Class B to win the (GAM)e. We hold an annual GAM Workshop in May, ahead of the June 15th Decision. Our collective GAM savings have exceeded $10 million.
We assist in evaluating Class A eligibility and assess potential strategies for both Class A and B.
